What I’ve Learned

Nick Tran once hesitated on a tough people decision, hoping things would resolve on their own. Instead, the delay weighed down the entire team. That experience taught him a lasting truth:

“When you hesitate, the whole team pays the price.”

The issue wasn't about being wrong — it was about seeing that avoiding hard decisions doesn’t protect the team. It erodes trust, clarity, and progress.

How I’ve Sharpened

Nick turned that moment into a leadership edge by sharpening how he makes decisions that strengthen teams:

  • Provide clarity. He uses a simple competence/effort grid to quickly diagnose fit. “People deserve clarity about where they stand and what’s expected.”
  • Act with courage. When someone is misaligned, he addresses it directly and compassionately — knowing the rest of the team is watching.
  • Explain the why. He always shares the reasoning behind decisions, so the team understands it’s about enabling collective success, not individual criticism.
  • Invest in growth. For those willing to improve, Nick doubles down on coaching and encouragement to help them succeed.

Why It Matters

Strengthening a team isn’t about avoiding conflict or keeping everyone comfortable. It’s about making decisions — sometimes tough ones — that clear the way for others to thrive.

“Your responsibility as a leader is to create the conditions for the team to succeed. That means being clear, being courageous, and always keeping the team’s potential at the center.”
